I only started a blog on Medium a few years ago, but I’ve written over 30 articles now. I have decided that going forward I will be publishing future articles on my own website. I’ve been thinking about this for a while now, and recent events have made my decision easier.
Medium does nothing to help promote my articles member only ones or otherwise, but I will be posting them there as well after they are published on my dedicated website so that my current followers on Medium will still get notified of new content. It’s a bit of a tricky situation because I won’t be able to re-publish old articles on my own website without the duplicate content SEO problem which I will have to think about. Sean Wes is right- you need your own platform: Build your own platform.
I think there was a misconception by some that I was being paid to write on Medium or promoted by them. I am not and I wasn’t. I just like writing and sharing knowledge from time to time and I used their platform initially because I thought it was a good way to build an audience in a place where people actually read things (rare these days in a world full of cat videos). I think people would still find my articles if they were published elsewhere since most of the external traffic to them is brought in by Google and other sites anyway.
All I ask is that if something I write is interesting or useful it could be shared with others from time to time.
In other news I have decided to buckle down and get on with developing my concept art portfolio since I don’t actually make any money by writing blog posts as fulfilling as it is, and doing art relaxes me and is more constructive right now.
